Two free webinars: eBooks & WordPress

Carterette Series WebinarsI’m very happy to be participating in the next Carterette Series webinars sponsored by the Georgia Library Association on Wednesday, January 18 from 2 – 4:15 PM. Registration is free.

The always awesome Kate Sheehan will talk about Ebooks, Discovery, and the Library and I’ll be talking about WordPress for Library Websites.

Be sure to check out their archive of past webinars for some great learning opportunities. And while you’re at it, like their Facebook page to make sure you see news of future programs.

(Still catching up – this is for Day 8 of #blog12daysxmas!)

14 Things To Tame

Check out  14 Things to Tame, a terrific new Learning 2.0 project for teachers from Sara Kelley-Mudie.  They’ll be covering a lot of ground over the next 15 weeks! You can be sure I’ll be ‘stealing’ stuff from Sara for some of my own projects.  (Thanks Sara!) Lucky teachers at The Forman School in Litchfield CT to have Sara putting this together.

(Still catching up – this is for Day 9 of #blog12daysxmas!)

Cool Tools for School

Cool Tools for School

Cool Tools for School

We kicked off another Learning 2.0 program today! This one is called Cool Tools for School and was the brainchild of  J’aime Pfeiffer (Capital Region BOCES) and her colleagues at other nearby BOCES School Library Systems:   Jen Henry (CVES BOCES), Deb Booth (HFM BOCES), Dee Portzer (Questar III), Paige Jaeger (WSWHE BOCES).

We all started talking about this last summer, but finally got around to setting it in motion just 2 weeks ago! Despite a quick start, we’re taking a slow approach with this program. Instead of a new lesson/thing being posted every week, we’ll offer a new topic every 3 weeks. This should give everybody time to digest the topic and have time to do more exploring. We’ll see! It will be a fun experiment.

We have just shy of 100 people signed up. And at the end of day 1, 7 people had already completed the first lesson. We’re off to a fast start for our leisurely program!

Making Learning Stick

I’m just catching up after spending most of the week at the Internet Librarian conference. And what a terrific conference it was!

I was happy to participate in the Learning, Literacy & Training track on Monday, co-presenting with Bobbi Newman and Emily Clasper.  And best of all our “Training is not Learning” session was the first one of the first day, so I was done early and could focus on all the other great sessions for the remaining time.

My talk included a dozen tips to help encourage the participants in your classes to become more interested, engaged and independent lifelong learners.

23 Things for Professional Development

I posted this on our Learn with CDLC project web site.

If you want to continue learning more “things” over the summer, here’s a terrific opportunity! The 23 Things for Professional Development program starts June 20 and just like our Learn with CDLC project, it’s a self-directed learning program.

23 Things is a self-directed course aimed at introducing you to a range of tools that could help your personal and professional development as a librarian, information professional or something else.

Some of the things they’re covering are the same as what you’ve been learning here and would be a great chance to further explore those topics. And best of all, there are lots of new topics and opportunities to connect with colleagues all over the world. This sounds like fun. For news and updates, follow their tweets at @cpd23.

I’m going to try and join in. Who else is on board?

Learn with CDLC! Learning 2.0 program

Learn with CDLC is off to a great start! We have 150 people signed up for this program, with close to 50 already on the waiting list for the next program. We just didn’t have enough people to manage more than 150 participants.  And just 2 days into the first week, 50 people have already finished the first exercise. A great beginning!

This program is sponsored by the Capital District Library Council, which is a multi-type regional library system here in the Albany, NY area. Members include 4 regional school library systems, 3 regional public library systems and many academic, medical, government and special libraries.

Instead of 23 things, we’re doing 10. Sounds a bit less daunting maybe? Though I think if we counted everything we’re asking people to do, there probably are 23 things.  Either way, there’s lots of fun and learning ahead.

Week 1 is Blogging, Week 2 is RSS. Then photo sharing, videos, online communities, webinars, productivity tools and more.

I’m so excited to be running this program in my own home region! It’s great fun to see many of my longtime friends and colleagues participating and connecting with lots of new folks too. Wish us luck keeping up with it all.
