Free Rice – Feed the World, Exercise Your Brain

I’d forgotten about the Free Rice website until a friend mentioned it on Facebook today.  For every right answer to their online quizzes, they donate free rice to the UN World Food Program. And now they have quizzes not only for vocabulary, but also math, foreign languages, geography, art and even chemistry.

I though I’d put my summertime procrastinating mood to some good use and have been refreshing my math skills and German vocabulary. I would have loved these when I was a kid (ok, I was a geeky kid!). Maybe your kids will too? Ok, it’s back to work for me. Or maybe it’s time to see if I know anything about chemistry?

A 12 year old on future careers

I just loved this quote from a local 12 year old girl.

“I thought about being a pharmacist or lawyer, but at this point I’m kind of counting that before I have to find a major job, they’ll invent a new field that I’ll like and do well in.”    (Albany Times Union, Sunday May 25)

And no doubt they will!

I think back to when I was 12 and I know I wasn’t expecting that there would be new careers to choose from in the future. I would be a math teacher, that’s as far as my 12 year old mind got. (Never did do that though.) Yet there have been plenty of new careers ‘invented’ in my lifetime and I’m now doing (and loving) work that I couldn’t have imagined when I was 12 or 24 or even 36.

I just love that this is a part of her expectations. The future will indeed hold exciting, new opportunities for her. Rock on!

On Sharing Photos & My Not-So Clean Desk

clean desk Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love flickr. I love how shared photos & conversations around those photos help me connect with friends, family and colleagues. And how photos can bring to life, places I may never get to see in person.

And thanks to the generosity of people who share their photos via Creative Commons licensing, flickr is also a terrific source of images for livening up your blog, illustrating a school project or for use in presentations. Use flickr’s advanced search option to find Creative Commons licensed content.

Most of my own photos are licensed for use by anyone as long as it’s a non-commercial use and they give me credit. Like many other people, I set up a  search alert on Google that lets me know whenever it finds my flickr user name mentioned anywhere. It’s always interesting to see where a photo may end up. And sometimes rather funny.

The photo above, ended up on a blog posting encouraging people to bring a bit of order to their workday by clearing up some of the clutter on their desks. A laudable goal. One that I will now try to live up to. I’ve been clearing mountains of papers all week. I hope to see the surface of my desk soon.

With that goal in mind for the New Year, let me wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2009.
