Public Libraries

Is there a Red Box DVD machine in your library’s future?

Princeton Public Library just installed a Red Box DVD machine outside their building. What a great idea. Janie Hermann posted this photo and note about the service to Facebook today:

“We are a pilot site at PPL for having Red Box services to supplement the library collection. This gives our library customers 24 hour access to the newest DVDs, means that we do not have to buy as many copies of new releases (thus saving money), and we can a cut of the money from having the Red Box on site that we can use for collection development. Win, win, win — at least we hope so. Pilot projects are exciting.” (More info)

7 Ways Your Public Library Can Help You During A Bad Economy

7 Ways Your Public Library Can Help You During A Bad Economy: Handy short article on the ways library services and resources can help people at ANY time, not just during a bad economy.

1. You can get pretty much any book at the library
2. Yes, we have movies
3. Kids Activities
4. Save Money and maybe your life!
5. Make new friends
6. Find a new job
7. Libraries listen to consumers!

Really interesting comments from library users listing lots of additional services that they find valuable. I loved this comment in particular:

Using my local library has been one of my resolutions for 2008 and I can report that its going great. I’ve saved a ton of money by reading books from my library vs. Amazon.com. I use Amazon.com to research and keep track of titles and when I’ve read one of those titles from the library I check the “I own it” so I can get better recommendations.

Can’t wait for the day we all have catalogs that have those sorts of “amazon” features….. someday soon?

Summer Reading Photos

I did it!
The 2008 Summer Reading photo pool at flickr is growing by leaps and bounds. Tons of great photos of programs, activities, displays and more. Like this great photo from the Newport (OR) Public Library. Take a look at the pool for some fun ideas. And please add your photos too!

p.s. Don’t forget to check out the news on the Summer Reading blog.

A Baker’s Dozen – 13 Web 2.0 Technologies

This is terrific – an online learning opportunity for library customers modeled after Helene Blowers’ Learning 2.0 projects. A Baker’s Dozen – 13 Web 2.0 Technologies from Arlington Heights (IL) Memorial Library

You may have seen the phrase “social networking,” along with mention of sites such as MySpace and FaceBook. Do you watch or even upload videos to YouTube? Do you read blogs and subscribe to RSS feeds? Maybe you’ve added some photos to Flickr. All of the aforementioned sites are part of the Web 2.0 craze.

Please join AHML for the next year and 1 month for a Baker’s Dozen; each month this series will highlight a Web 2.0 topic and tool as well as feature a brief assignment (designed to take no more than a few minutes). (About Baker’s Dozen)

What a great idea. Yay to the staff of AHML for providing this opportunity. It will be interesting to watch as the 13 months unfold.
