Cool Tools for School

Cool Tools for School

Cool Tools for School

We kicked off another Learning 2.0 program today! This one is called Cool Tools for School and was the brainchild of  J’aime Pfeiffer (Capital Region BOCES) and her colleagues at other nearby BOCES School Library Systems:   Jen Henry (CVES BOCES), Deb Booth (HFM BOCES), Dee Portzer (Questar III), Paige Jaeger (WSWHE BOCES).

We all started talking about this last summer, but finally got around to setting it in motion just 2 weeks ago! Despite a quick start, we’re taking a slow approach with this program. Instead of a new lesson/thing being posted every week, we’ll offer a new topic every 3 weeks. This should give everybody time to digest the topic and have time to do more exploring. We’ll see! It will be a fun experiment.

We have just shy of 100 people signed up. And at the end of day 1, 7 people had already completed the first lesson. We’re off to a fast start for our leisurely program!

Google Search & Google Tools Update

Thanks to the great library folks at Capital Region BOCES for a fun day of learning and sharing. Fun to be in a room full of librarians when an earthquake strikes. Everyone instantly started researching and connecting with friends to find out what happened.

As promised, the slides from today. If anything is missing or a URL doesn’t work, do let me know!

Tech Smackdown!

The 2011 Carol A. Kearney Leadership Retreat was held earlier this week at Cornell. What an amazing event. I had no idea this retreat had been going on for 20 years.

The event, put on by the NYLA Section on School Libraries, was organized by Sara Kelly Johns & Christine Hatami – with the help of many other school librarians from around the state.  This year’s theme was “Think, Create, Share and Grow: Transforming Your School Library Leadership” and included 2 days of terrific presentations and discussions. Check out the wiki for details on the topics covered and links to many valuable resources.

Chris Harris & I had fun running the Tech Smackdown. We had about 20 brave folks who volunteered to shared their favorite apps and tools with the group. The evening of fun continued with an auction to raise scholarship funds – much fun was had by all and over $2300 was raised!

WISE (Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize, Express)

BOCES program guides students in seeking, understanding information online

The School Library Services (SLS) of the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES has introduced local school districts to a new curriculum model called WISE (Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize, Express) that’s meant to teach elementary students how to analyze and judge the credibility of the massive amounts of information they have access to both online and on paper.

Congrats to Paige Jaeger and Mary Ratzer – great program and great coverage!

Thank you Rockland BOCES SLS

Thank you to the great folks at the Rockland BOCES SLS – particularly Anthony Hosmer, who asked me to take part in their workshop day earlier this week. I had a lovely time with all of you and heard lots of great ideas. And besides that, I learned a few tips for cupcake decorating thanks to Hello Cupcake folks! And we all know how much I love cupcakes. :)

Resources from my workshops are on my class website.  I look forward to hearing what new projects you’re working on!

New Tech Camp Workshop – but no “canoe time”

I’m really looking forward to a new workshop tomorrow!  We’ve been calling it various things: Tech Camp – The Sequel, Advanced Tech Camp, Research 2.0 and so on. Whatever you call it, this workshop will give participants the chance to explore a wide range of web tools that will help them and their students take a new approach to research projects, one that involves collaborating and sharing. Share ideas on how to integrate these tools into your curriculum. Learn how to take advantage of tools that will help you and your students manage resources, organize information, collaborate with team members, connect with experts and create meaningful presentations.

Our School Library Learning 2.0 Tech Camps are one and two day immersions in technology tools and and  opportunities to explore ideas for integrating technology into the curriculum.  These sessions offer school librarians an opportunity to explore a variety of online tools & services that will help them work more efficiently, improve their library’s online presence and enhance student learning.

Canoes at Sagamore Great Camp

The “camp” in Tech Camp comes not from the unconference/barcamp tradition, but from actually going away to a “camp” of some sort. Elaine Baker at the Southern Adirondack Library System started this tradition in 2000 with continuing education trips to the Sagamore Great Camp in the Adirondacks. And she made sure every workshop included plenty of what we called “canoe time” – time away from the classroom to share ideas and connect with colleagues, whether in a canoe, hiking or hanging out in front of the fire.

Linda Fox, former director of the Capital Region BOCES School Library System and Dee Portzer, director of the Questar III School Library System,  picked up on this idea and took the tech camp idea to Rensselaerville Institute – making sure the concept of  “canoe time” was kept!  Since then, I’ve had the great pleasure of conducting Tech Camps for a number of other school library systems around NYS. Unfortunately, with tightening budgets, the “camp” part of tech camp is disappearing.  What’s been lost has been the “canoe time”,  that opportunity to get away from the our everyday commitments and build new collaborations and connections with our colleagues.
